PreS-Gr 2—Jasper Rabbit and his mother go shopping one Thursday for much-needed new underwear. Bypassing the boring white pairs, Jasper begs his mom to get the peculiar looking but comfy neon green underwear—even if it resembles Frankenstein's monster. Reluctantly, Jasper's mother agrees, and so one pair of the psychedelic undies goes home with them. That night, however, Jasper tries to get rid of the underwear but it returns, "staring at him with that ghoulish, greenish glow." The garment's bright color and changing expressions are highlighted by their placement on dark backgrounds. Finally, Jasper successfully buries the underwear in a deep, deep hole. A totally black spread is followed by one with Jasper's huge round eyes, fearful of the dark, now dull without the green glow. After he digs up his original pair, Jasper spends his whole allowance and festoons his room with an entire collection of creepy green underwear. First introduced in Creepy Carrots, Jasper's antics are equally humorous and appropriately but safely spooky. VERDICT An enjoyable and comfortably spine-tingling picture book for a Halloween or any day storytime.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

* "This strikes the ideal balance between frightening and hilarious, and like the underwear itself, readers are guaranteed to keep coming back for this storytime platinum!" (Booklist - Starred Review May 15, 2017)"Reynolds dives even farther into elementary-grade horror here, balancing nicely between humorous and haunting in tone and events....Young horror fans will fall immediately in love with the terrifying undies and hope that accompanying merch is in the works." (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books July/August 2017)* "Balances a really spooky premise with the hilarity that accompanies any mention of underwear....Perfect for those looking for a scary Halloween tale that won't leave them with more fears than they started with." (Kirkus Reviews - starred review July 2017)* "Once again, Reynolds and Brown are in perfect comedic synch as they channel the surprises and creeping dread of a thriller. Brown’s noir-style b&w illustrations make the most of the premise, and the innate absurdity of being afraid of one’s undergarments will be a surefire winner with many kids." (Publisher's Weekly - starred review July 17, 2017)"First introduced in Creepy Carrots, Jasper’s antics are equally humorous and appropriately but safely spooky. VERDICT An enjoyable and comfortably spine-tingling picture book for a Halloween or any day storytime." (School Library Journal August 2017)"Humorous text...captures Jasper’s age-appropriate not-quite-a-big-kid dilemma. Brown’s noirish...illustrations—black, white, gray, and Day-Glo green—heighten both the silliness and the spookiness that are on display in equal measure." (The Horn Book September/October 2017)

This book is a big hit in our house with our three and five-year-old boys! They love it so much that I even surprised them with their very own pair that I created with some glow-in-the-dark paint, a fabric marker and some whitey tighties!
My little one is two and loved Creepy Carrots, so when I saw there was a sequel coming I pre-ordered it. Honestly I thought I was more excited than he was... until he saw it. He immediately recognized Jasper and got very excited. At bedtime we read it twice and twice again first thing in the morning. We are both more than satisfied. Also I honestly think I would have easily enjoyed this book almost as much even if I had not read Creepy Carrots a thousand and one times. As an aside: the central theme of this book is trying to be a "big rabbit". I enjoyed that it was something Jasper strove for but also struggled with.
We love, love, love Creepy Carrots, both my 2 year old and 6 year old adore it. So we had to get this one as soon as it was released, and it didn't disappoint. It helps that they are both obsessed with underwear (Thanks, Captain Underpants). I prefer Creepy Carrots to this one, slightly, but this one is a great update. We love looking at the different faces on the carrots on the front and end pages, and we loved seeing Crackenhopper field in this one. Both are great Halloween books without mentioning Halloween, although we read them all year round. Can't say enough good things about this new book!
Cute and funny book for all ages! I find myself laughing through this every time we read it (which has been every night for the past month). My son’s school invited the author to come for a reading and my son fell in love. We also went to our local bookstore for a reading and loved it even more! Aaron Reynolds is an amazing writer with a hilarious personality.
We first read Creepy Carrots and my two daughters (3and 5 at the time)fell in love, I didn’t quite get it but they asked to have it read to them over and over again. I let them each pick two books out each night before bed but with this book, Mama, was getting out of there early with them both picking Creepy Carrots! #winningWhen I saw there was a second CREEPY book I jumped on it! I love how Creepy Pair of Underware is large in size, with pictures that pop with the chosen color (ghoulish green for this one) and all the little details to pick up on. You can create really fun voices to help entertain and engage your kids. I really loved the page that offers a connection to the first book, Creepy Carrots. My kids and I are hoping for a third creepy book with Jasper the cute little rabbit. Annnnd In okay that I now have to read 4 books again each night since there are now two in the series.Write more!
I am always on the lookout for children’s books that have the elusive combination of great artwork and great stories. Usually you get one or the other, but not both. My daughter recently came home with a book from the library with stunning color block artwork, the kind that you could easily rip out and frame. The writing though, was so impossibly difficult and the story just so peculiar (and not in a good way) that I promptly returned it. Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds with artwork by Peter Brown is the exception—it has a really interesting story, written in such a way that it makes for great bedtime reading, and fabulous illustrations.Jasper the rabbit on an outing with his mother, purchases a glorious pair of creepy underwear. He spends most of the rest of the book trying to get rid of the persistently glowing briefs. My nine-year-old loved that the story was about underwear and that there was a bit of scare to it. It’s also very silly—always an appealing quality in a children’s book. The black and white and green glowing artwork really makes this book pretty spectacular. Peter Brown uses his black and white illustrations of the story as a backdrop for interjecting the green glow of the menacing, but kooky underwear. Without the illustrations—which remind me of another of my favorite children’s book artists, Scott Magoon—this book wouldn’t have the same impact even though the narrative of Jasper the Rabbit is so endearing. In particular there is a constant green glow (the only color in the book) that reflects upon anything that is white including the bed sheets in Jasper’s room and the envelope that he stuffs the underwear into.Even the terrified expression that appears on Jasper’s face throughout the book, is painted an eerie dayglow green. There are two glossy black back-to-back pages that open up where Reynolds and Brown demonstrate the state of darkness in Jasper’s room—a really simple but great effect.Creepy Pair is a great story about growing up. It’s got the right humor angle for young readers and even gives a nod to another Reynolds and Brown collaboration, Creepy Carrots, which is next on our reading list.(Note: This review is provided courtesy of the Midnight Book Club. My 3 and 5 year olds started eating carrots thanks to Creepy Carrots, by the same author/illustrator. Creepy Underwear has the same charm, with a dash of the absurd. Its a little light on text, but my 5 year old still likes it. This story got my kids excited about getting dressed in the morning, which is a huge plus!
This book does not disappoint! Just as cool as the first book, Creepy Carrots! My daughter and I love reading these books together! They are read weekly, if not daily. XD Always a popular choice for story time. 😄
