About the Author

Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

When purchasing a digital version of a textbook you should expect the publisher to put the exact same elements into the digital version as they did with the original physical versions. You will find out that the digital version only has the front cover in color and everything else is black and white. Terrible idea. It wouldn't have been too difficult to put out a digital version in color, just saying. Furthermore, first time user for Amazon kindle (PC) and I find the software awful, there is NO Dark/Night theme option available/built in. I have used other Ebook programs like BryteWave that have an option for Night theme.The only good feed back I can say about this product is the reason I bought the digital version in the first place is because for the price to own it digitally through Amazon is permanent instead of "X" days of access for the same price.

I graduated with a Bachelor's in criminal justice from Loyola University Chicago, which is actually one of the only universities/colleges in the nation to offer a class specifically geared toward the study of victims of crime. When I took the class, this edition was the most current (and required text), so it was very expensive. Even though this book covered the study of victims of crime in great depth, was extremely informational, and gave a whole new perspective of the criminal justice system (CJS), I would buy the most current edition instead because victim advocacy & victim involvement in the CJS is rapidly growing & changing. Therefore, if you want the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend buying the most current edition. If that is not an issue, then I highly recommend this edition.

Other reviewers have largely been unfair--never mind that several reviewers were giving negative ratings to sellers, rather than the book itself.I find Karmen's book to be quite easy to understand. Some have complained it is too "wordy." But I find that the author often provides clarification, subtlety, or nuance, and at no point did I feel that it was a chore to read. The book is comprehensive, which I expect for a semester of study on an entire sub-discipline of criminology. There are plenty of pertinent examples, interesting anecdotes, and the points are made in a familiar and approachable way which is not presumptuous of your previous academic background. This has been one of the better textbooks assigned in my studies.

Being a student working toward a Master's Degree in Criminal Psychology, I was in need of this book for a class on Victimology. The book is very thorough and very informative on the different types of victims, their part in helping get the criminals off the street and the aid we can provide to the victim after falling prey to a various criminal acts. The book was delivered as described. I would definitely purchase from this seller again....

It was cheaper (even with shipping) to buy the book here than it was at my school's bookstore. I don't sell textbooks back because you never get nearly what you paid for them, but this one was pretty good regardless. I was able to use it for several other papers in other classes.
