Instructions and photos for engine work are not for the N-18 engine (turbo removal, timing chain, head removal, etc). People who rate this book highly probably have the older N12, 14, 16 engine in their car. If you have the N-18, this still might be the best book available (unfortunately). Plan to take your own photos and make notes during disassembly to aid in reassembly. You can probably do internal N-18 engine work, but I am concerned that the torque specs are not correct. In many cases, the component is entirely different than the earlier N-12/14/16 and the fasteners are in different locations, or completely different. I am not doing reassembly yet, and may raise or lower my rating depending on how things turn out.
Like anything Mini, if you plan to work on it you need special tools. This manual is the same. Would have given this 5 stars, but some inaccuracies in the manual prevented me from doing that. For example, when removing the High Pressure Fuel Pump, 160-19 step 2, it says "Remove intake manifold". There is absolutely no need to remove the intake manifold. What it should have said is "remove air filter housing and ducts". Even in one of the pictures you can see that the intake manifold is still installed. Also, in the On-Board Diagnostics section, OBD-2,3, when talking about using a scan tool to reset the Malfunction indicator light (MIL) it does not say how to accomplish this. If you are wondering, and you have a manual, connect the scan tool, put the key fob all the way in, DO NOT depress the clutch, push the "Engine Start" button. This will allow you to read and erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). I think this manual will prove invaluable with regards to future repairs, but inaccuracies or omissions like the ones stated above could cause unnecessary work/frustrations for inexperienced mechanics.
It's more focused on the N14 motor with only the exceptional data for my N18 for the sections I've needed so far, but It's the ONLY manual for the 2013 so I'm stuck. Most repair photos are black and white with mediocre contrast, but you can usually tell what they are driving at. You have to flip around a bit on some repairs "take this part off per section blah blah; then adjust this assembly per this other section". All that been said, the specs are accurate and the info complete enough to have gotten me through the several repairs I have used it for already.
Manual does not have very detailed instructions on repairs. I would not recommend the purchase of this book. More useful repair information found on mini forums and YouTube.
Basic info, perhaps one step up from a Haynes or Chilton manual. Not a factory service manual, lacks details.
Think better suited to a prof mechanic. Some info very sparse and unless you do major mechanical work on your car most info useless. The electrical wiring diagrams are a nightmare to follow
I own a few Bentley manuals and I love them, if you understand how the manual is laid out you wont have a problem, it's more tech geared but also works perfect for a backyard mechanic, I bought it so I could learn how to properly replace the timing chain in my 2008 mini cooper s clubman, it's very in depth and will give you all the info you need. Also Amazon sells the timing tools too for the mini!
If you do your own repairs on these cars, this manual is MUCH better than the Haynes version. Clear, doesn't leave out steps or show different models than the one you're working on, and is COMPLETE. You could rebuild your entire car with this book...helped me do a LOT of stuff I'd never done on this particular car, saved me probably thousands over taking it to the dealer or even an independent mechanic. AWESOME MUST-HAVE for the DIY Gen2 R55/56/57 owner. Buy it; worth every penny.
