I really wanted to like this book. The story has a good premise and it was interesting to me when I saw the description. It looked like something that hadn't been done before. And that's the best part. The story as a concept is really great. Three werewolves who don't want to be werewolves have to learn to deal with this new life they have. And for an independently-published book, it has impeccable grammar and punctuation. I only caught one typo near the end, so kudos to the author for the editing! It moves SO FAST though. Too fast. You want a book to keep you in the action, but the story kinda goes from "Oh no, we're werewolves" to "yes we understand how this works" in the first couple chapters. There's little learning experience. The innate understanding doesn't feel natural, even with Amber's backstory. I feel like something is missing here. Problems are introduced and solved within a few pages, too, not just at the beginning, but through the whole book, which leaves little intrigue.I feel like with all the material here, the book could have been split into two volumes, adding a good deal more to each and slowing the narrative down just a little.Splitting the book might have also helped me connect to the characters a little more. There's little meta that really helps me get into their minds, and in the end, I don't particularly feel a connection to any of them. The book relies on rejection very heavily as a plot device to make the reader pity the characters, but there's too much of it. All the main characters are estranged from their families, either from the beginning or through the book, and this plot point just feels cobbled together rather than important to the story.Anyway... The story is good, but it needs a bit of work with pacing and character development.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Misfit Pack. It takes the werewolf storyline in a fresh and interesting direction. None of the members of the pack chose to become werewolves, it was just something that kind of happened to them. Now this small group of total strangers suddenly has to learn to bond together to navigate and survive the world of supernaturals. The characters themselves are well thought out and well developed. They grabbed my interest right away and held onto it for the duration of the story. The world building is also top notch. The scenery and the various groups that inhabit it feel natural and believable. There is plenty of action and it's nicely paced. There are also plenty of unanswered questions to keep my interest for the next story. I would definitely recommend Misfit Pack.
For a novel with a pace that moves like a tornado through a trailer park, the characters are remarkably well done. The plot hits the characters repeatedly about the head and body in a frenzy of life altering events and yet the author manages to weave their history, personality, and desires into the whirlwind without it seeming like a cheap coat of paint on a card board cut out. This is not the story for anyone who likes to stop and savor the scents of the garden, or smell the damn roses. Nope, this is dodging the debris in the tornado. Overall, the characters are solid enough to carry the story. Consistent, likable, and you want them to survive from the moment you meet them. The plot is simple enough to be the storm shelter in the tornado but without any real villains - the "bad guys" aren't really bad and I found the "villains" to be more speed bumps that real villains. The whole novel revolves around the characters coming together for survival against the impersonal systems that society has in place to deal with people like them. Only yesterday they were completely different people. But today, they are different and now they have to play by a different set of rules, and of course nobody bothered to write those rules down. This is the first book in the series, and I liked the second book as well.
What happens when a redhead, a pink-haired lawyer, and a homeless teen all go to a concert? Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, right? Well, it's not, it's a new series by Stephanie Foxe and a real treat! It is geared for teen readers but it not Potterville! Werewolves, witches and mayhem aside, there is danger with blood, obstacles to overcome and a demon with a sense of humor. There is also humanity, caring, stepping in and "owning it" that just isn't seen as much today that was much appreciated by this first time reader of hers. Really looking forward to the next!
This is a great book.It is a fantastic read, and a great ‘opener’ to a new series. If you love the Dresden Files, but are wondering what to read while Jim Butcher writes his next book, this might be the series for you.The opening premise is simple: three individuals are all bitten by a Werewolf while attending a concert. Now that they are werewolves, they have to learn how to fit in to the structure of werewolf society. The (previously) strangers are now bound together into a pack because of the events at the concert. Unfortunately, under shifter law, their actions are illegal. This pack of misfits must now navigate supernatural political intrigue, whilst trying to survive various attacks on their employment, their housing, and their very lives! Each character is well defined, and likeable. Each character has flaws as well as strengths, and each has an interesting back story that may lead to interesting plot lines in future books. There are a number of interesting and arcane questions that are posed (but not answered) in this book. Obviously, these questions will be resolved in future books within the series. I’m already waiting for the next book in the series, to see how the author will answer these questions.I LOVE this book!!! I don’t want to wait for the next book - I want to read it right now!If you like books with a supernatural theme, and a deft sense of humour, then purchase this book right now!!!!!
