It's an okay book. I just hate that it is not cited, or referenced. It's also a little disorganized. But I agree with her on the topic. But, I can't really share it around. I need a booked that is well researched, and shown it is well researched. This is a controversial topic, and if it is not cited well, how can anyone trust you? Especially if they are skeptical on the topic at hand. Just my opinion.
Any women considering the pill for "regulating" the period, or dealing with other menstrual issues should read this book. I'm a health care practitioner and Sweetening the Pill opened my eyes up to all kinds of issues that women will usually NOT talk about to their doctors. But, if we invite with a gentle, open minded inquiry into their experience with the pill, then the truth of her experience will often spill out.Holly is spot on with issues that rarely get addressed. The Pill is usually not the magic solution we've been sold, it simply masks the underlying issues, which then surface with a vengeance once the the synthetic hormonal tide is stopped. If you are considering using birth control pills to "regulate" your menstrual issues, then read the book and think again!
As others have said, there's a ton of great and interesting information in this book, but it's not very well-written or organized, and there are a lot of typos, even on important words like the names of different medicines or birth control pills. I'm able to read between the lines (and mistakes) so I still recommend this book, but just be aware-if it's going to bug you, maybe try another one. I find that Taking Charge of Your Fertility Taking Charge of Your Fertility, 20th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health has a lot of the same info but without the disorganization and typos.
It tends to repeat itself (lightly) at times and the writing feels a bit sloppy in some places, but the content is golden and a must-read for women regardless of how they feel about hormonal contraceptives. I heard about it while heavily questioning my health on the pill and started reading it after I decided to stop taking it, and this book completely solidified my decision and backed up all of my suspicions that doctors refused to acknowledge. You owe it to yourself, your health, and the women around you to read this book. Most likely, you'll be nodding along during majority of it.
Relies on anecdotes for most of its material, cites very few credible studies, and was full of false and misleading information. We should always be pushing for better and safer contraceptives, but this book takes it too far. Also, it was painfully obvious that this book was never edited before being published. Not only were there many typos but much of the writing seemed to jump all over the place in a stream of consciousness type fashion.
An absolute must read for women, this is a courageous book that dares speak out against the powers that be in the pharmaceutical industry, who puts profits above the serious health concerns that taking hormone-based contraceptives, popularly known as "the pill," pose; and the FDA who is supposed to test these drugs for safety, but is populated by people with huge conflicts of interest, so it cannot do its job. Then there are groups, like Planned Parenthood, who blindly and irresponsibly follow FDA recommendations without any independent knowledge of the deleterious side effects of these hormone-based drugs or the biology involved. For those who wish to learn more, the author gives a large number of sources, both anecdotal evidence by the many women who had been adversely affected by these drugs as the author herself had been, and sources based on rigorous research into the side effects of shutting down the vital function of ovulation in the pre-monopausal woman.
... and not always in a good way. Prescribed for issues beyond birth control, The Pill doesn't mimic pregnancy or regulate periods, it hijacks womens endocrine system. This book is full of insights, research, and information to arm women with the ammunition they need to stop taking The Pill and reclaim their bodies.
The gratefulness I feel towards Holly for writing this book while also going through her own recovery from the pill is beyond describable --- I know how hard it must have been at times my friend.Reading this book will empower you with information related to the pill; the history, the business of it, and obviously the multiple side effects that come wrapped in each and every pill so many of us thought were "safe" and the "right thing to do".It is a book I would want to give to every woman to read because the information given to us regarding the pill when we go via our normal routes, such as our doctor or gynecologist, is most often slightly angled. Side effects are not often discussed and when they are they are easily dismissed to be linked to the pill anyway. Making anyone having that discussion unsure of what is really happening in their own body.Learning what that one little pill can do to us when we take it day in and day out for years is not only our responsibility, it is our right. Holly has given us a wonderful head start on being independent women by writing this book. It will help making our own decisions based on facts, not assumptions and profit.Reading this book will make you empowered and grateful!Thank you Hollyxo
