The Laskett: The Story of a Garden

From the Publisher

This is the story of a garden. It is also the portrait of a marriage expressed through the vision and mystery of creating a garden. Neither the author, Roy Strong, nor his wife, designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, had foreseen this when they eloped and married in 1971. Over thirty years on, they find themselves surrounded by the largest formal garden created in Britain since the war, increasingly recognized as one of the most important of the second half of the 20th century. And yet it was done not only with little money and less labor, but quite unconsciously. It is not, however, so much the horticultural triumph that will grip the reader as what this garden on the Welsh Borders in Herefordshire has come to mean in the lives of its creators. The Laskett is the story of a great love affair, a portrait of a marriage, a haunting and human tale of a garden as the domain of ghosts and as the habitat of memory. No one who reads this remarkable book will put it down unmoved.

From the Inside Flap

This is the story of one man and a garden. It is also the portrait of a marriage expressed through the vision and mystery of creating a garden. Neither the author, Roy Strong, nor his wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, had foreseen this when they eloped and married in 1971. Over thirty years on they find themselves surrounded by the largest formal garden made in this country since 1945, increasingly recognized as one of the most important laid out in the second half of the twentieth century. And yet it was done not only with little money and less labour, but quite unconsciously.

But it is not so much the horticultural triumph that will grip the reader as what this garden on the Welsh Borders in Herefordshire has come to mean in the lives of its creators. Into the Laskett has been etched not only their own biographies but also the many people who crossed their lives and are commemorated within it. That galaxy includes not only garden icons, like Rosemary Verey, Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe and Ian Hamilton Finlay, but figures as varied as the photographer Sir Cecil Beaton, the painter John Piper and the fashion designer Jean Muir. It also enshrines memories of two great Oxford intellectual dynasties, the Omans and Trevelyans, of the great choreographer, Sir Frederick Ashton, of the Prince of Wales and his garden at Highgrove as well as a colourful pageant of minor characters from mole catchers to cats.

The Laskett is the unusual and unique story of someone who, with his wife, has been at the centre of the arts for half a century. A great love affair, a portrait of a marriage, a haunting and human tale of a garden as the domain of ghosts and as the habitat of memory, within its confines can be found both joy and happiness as well as the tears of tragedy. No one who reads this book will put it down unmoved.

I love garden books that are also written with a life story. Roy Strong and his wife have quite the story of their life together and their purchase of The Laskett and how they added to their lovely garden year after year. His best book.

This is a memoir with garden trappings rather than a true garden book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on celebrities and aristocracy with whom the author is involved or who visited his garden

I enjoyed reading this book so much that I will read it again and again. Mr. Strong has so many wonderful ideas and the photos were wonderful.

This is really a love story. Roy and his late wife built a dream on an unprepossessing site. Roy was the garden architect, his wife the plantswoman. Between them they created an English fantasy. Strong writes with wit and style. His artistic background comes clearly through. And there is real sadness: his wife tragically died before seeing the finished garden in all its glory. The book is gorgeously illlustrated and beautifully presented with 'period' maps of the garden in the end papers.

Sir Roy Strong is an Elizabethan out of time, and a courtier without a court. He writes with a sadness a la recherche du temps perdu, even when he writes contemporaneously. There is the air of Nick Carraway about him as he writes with pathos on the love of his life, The Laskett, his and his departed wifes garden. Born without lineage, there is something very telling, for example, about his other, portraits, book as he appears, like zelig, executed by the masters, in some of the greatest images of all ages.Roy Strong has created his own court in his garden, with many plaques and mottos around him, with references to ages that have gone, people that have passed, and even the deep emotions attached to household pets memorialised in statuary, initials and references. A deeply personal garden he reflects on plants given by the famous and the forgotten. people important in their fields, and people important in his memory. This may be one of the saddest books I have ever read. It is to be savoured, and should be taken in measures a few pages at a time, for it leaves an indelible impression. It is not only a garden book, and it is not only about a garden.
