This is a exquisite collection of love poems from a perspective of middle aged mature love. A very good read for those who have experienced it and can appreciate it.
Please don’t let the word “ethereal†in the description put you off; the poems in this chapbook, while indeed elegant and graceful, are tightly written, well-crafted work. Benitez traces a long-time relationship from meeting her future husband, “the young man/ I met on the second floor/ of a run-down dormitory.†(Pacific Northwest, The First Chapter), through “all of the years/that have fluttered and fallen;†(Towards the Stars). These poems reveal a strong marriage, where even “the sky is swollen with longing,†(Wind Chimes). After 13 years of marriage, the speaker is “wearing/ a new bra, cocoa brown/dipped in satin.†The poem ends with a movie fadeout scene: “She would do it all/over again; his hands agree.†(Touched).The majority of my poetry tends to deal with themes of loss and grief, and it was refreshing to read a chapbook of poems honoring a loving relationship, poems filled with sights and scents of cherry blossoms.
Cherry Blossom Days is a beautiful love story written in soft, lyrical poems that do not fail to touch hearts even after many readings.The journey of love has been documented through the use of imagery of nature. The theme of seasons and plants in various stages of their growth runs through the entire book. The poems talk of love being born, the difficulties that the couple goes through together, of waiting and meeting, and of the insecurities that, at times, live in the hearts of lovers. The lovely scenes created by the poet make them come alive in our minds and leaves the reader with a sense of gentle contentment.The book is full of lovely metaphors and images of nature at its most beautiful, even in its decline. My personal favourite is the second poem of the book, “The Path of a Pearl.â€Cherry Blossom Days has both short and slightly longer love poems interspersed by Haikus. The tone of the book is conversational, and the poems lyrical. At a couple of places, I felt that the poems have been broken into paragraphs that serve no purpose greater than structure, but the book, otherwise, is almost perfect in its content and presentation.An easy read, with gentle and loving poetry, the book has a very Asian feel to it in its imagery, but the emotions woven through it are timeless and pure. I would recommend this for a short, feel-good, weekend read that would surely bring a smile to your lips.

Sandy Benitiz is a brave poet, for in Cherry Blossom Days she explores the territory—love—wrought with minefields that invite failure. With a self-assured, matter-of-fact, serene voice, she manages, in poem after poem—from haikus (“Petals hide sharp words/thorns coated beneath pink steel/soft to woman’s touch) to narratives and meditative poems—to make us care about the narrator and her lover, and to be pleased that they’ve been together for so long. While she flirts with sentimentality, she never lapses into the treacly kind that makes the reader squirm. She seduces the reader to identify with her and thus endows that reader with the gift of a pleasant, enriching experience. Cherry Blossom Days is highly recommended to those readers who still believe in the positive aspects of love and those, too, who are cynical about it—their minds will be changed by this charming love story in verse.
This is a beautiful book of love poems that anyone who's ever been in a relationship could identify with. Realistic slices of life, that combined with clarity of vision and the energy of the lines themselves brings to mind work of the ancient Chinese masters while remaining totally modern.
