Really great story, you will not want to put it down. Very well-written, flows extremely well. Deals with prejudices that are still around today towards women. This woman did not give up or give in. I was quite proud of her. You will thoroughly enjoy this book.
The name, Laurie Alice Eakes, attached to an historical novel always means a great read. Her attention to detail, her factual accuracy, her gripping, yet clean plots, and her ability with words all make for riveting page-turners. Coupled with the fact that she is herself legally blind, she brings her unique perspective on and experience of life to text that is a sensory delight. Rich in details sighted people miss or take for granted, she writes books that are a treat for the reader. "When Snow Flies" is another among a pantheon of really good reads by Laurie Alice Eakes.
To me, this is probably the best Laurie Alice Eakes book that I have read so far. And I thought "The Glassblower" was her best. I was immersed in the book right from the beginning. She vividly described poor Dr. Audrey Vanderleyden standing on an empty train platform waiting for someone to pick her up. Audrey and her late physician husband purchased a medical practice from Dr. Hornsby who drinks on the job. She is shocked when Dr. Hornsby refuses to honor the contract because he doesn't believe female physicians are competent. Financial and personal circumstances force her to enter a marriage of convenience with a blind physician Dr. Maxwell. The story flowed very well. The author explores friendship vs spousal loyalty. It's a very well-written book. I can't believe this gem escaped my notice up until now!
What a wonderful sad and happy story. The old days talk about women really having no choice about anything. I would definitely not have enjoyed living in those times. (and in these times, we're talking about equal pay ... so much changed in a century.) The rich lived well, but there really could not be a rich woman.Well, Ms Laurie Alice Eakes you certainly gave me wonderful hours of reading and I thank you. I wish there would be a follow-up of this story. For some reason
Found it hard to put down. Felt like I knew the characters. A very unusual plot but so touching. Love stories about doctors and what difficulties they dealt with in the past. Lovely ending. However I very much resent having to write these reviews before being able to read another book. I'm going to call Amazon to find out it I can bypass this requirement. They even make you write a required number of words. This is extremely time consuming. I'm very disappointed that Amazon puts it's readers through this.
It was an interesting story line considering the time period. Some thoughts and descriptions were rather repetitive. Enjoyed the love interest.
This book was not at all what I expected! I expected one of those cutesy, light romances, but this book actually had some substance to it. It brought to light what it must have been like for women trying to make their own way in the world & be respected as professionals at that time in history, and the difficult decisions they had to make. Very well-written. And, in the end, the title makes sense!
The premise is more interesting than the book. The author dwells too much on the main character's struggles to overcome sexism and blindness. Their self pity and anger become heavy handed and trite. The characters are predictable and shallow so there is no lasting interest in them and their stories.
